Optimizing Images for SEO: 3 Best Tips!

Just as it is important that you optimize the text on your website to be found more easily in Google, it is also important that you optimize the images you use on your website.

Optimizing Images for SEO: 3 Best Tips!

Whether you're using your own images or using free stock photos, optimizing your images for SEO is key! Here are the three most important tips to start optimizing the images on your website today so that they - and your entire website - are better found in Google. The tips are listed in order of activities. It is best to first adjust the file size (tip 1) then give the image the correct file name (tip 2) and add an alt tag after uploading the image (tip 3).

Tip 1. Reduce file size

Now that mobile-first is becoming increasingly important, having a fast website is crucial. One of the important points here is the file size of the images used on the website. Using beautiful photos on your website does not always mean that they are “heavy” and sometimes a few mb's in size.

Optimize your SEO image by compressing or reducing it. You can use Photoshop for this, but there are also handy free online tools that do this for you. Take a look at Optimizilla or Tinypng.

Tip 2. Change the file name

When you take a photo with your photo camera or mobile phone camera, an automatic file name is assigned to it. Often this is a name such as “image1054.jpg” or “DSC7543.jpg”. Just as you probably can't tell which photo it is from this name, Google also doesn't know what is in this photo. Therefore give a suitable file name to the photo so that it is clear what is visible. For example “webdesign-for-entrepreneurs.jpg” or “seo-workshop-online.jpg”. Make sure to include keywords in the file name that are important to the page and/or your website.

Extra tip: always use hyphens between the individual words and only lowercase letters in the file name!

Tip 3. Add alt tag

The alt tag or text of an image has a number of purposes:

For people with a visual impairment, this is the text that is read by screen readers so that it becomes clear what is visible in the image.

If the image cannot be loaded, for example, due to a slow connection, the alt text will be displayed.

The alt tag is a description for Google to know what's in the image.

Google itself cannot (yet) see what is on it from the image. However, by using the correct file name as described in tip 2, Google learns what can be seen in the image. However, the ALT tag contributes to this because it can be a slightly richer description than just the most important keywords. Make sure you add at least one alt-tag image on every page and don't forget to name the SEO images.
